Main researcher: Miquel de Moragas
Research team: Chris Kennett ; Itxasne Sagarzazu ; Anna Laura Rezende
Financed by: ARAI-2006 call for grants to support inter-university and/or intra-university research projects on immigration in Catalonia, funded by the Secretariat for Immigration and the Directorate General for Research of the Government of Catalonia.
Period: 04/2007-02/2008

The accelerated arrival of immigrants in Catalonia poses a series of challenges in terms of offering a response to the new social reality it creates. Sport is considered to be key in multicultural societies in order to reduce the risk of social exclusion that ethnic groups and immigrants may suffer. In this context, female immigrants face a more complex situation if we take account of the historic exclusion of women from sport and the impact of cultural and religious factors on doing sport.

The study offered applied research into the issue of how to encourage immigrant women, especially women from Latin America or Islamic cultures, to get involved in sport by examining what their sporting needs and habits are, and analysing initiatives that public authorities and/or associations promote. The results were: an academic contribution to the debate about sport, multiculturality, gender and social integration; an analysis of the sporting needs and habits of a large sample of immigrant women in Catalonia, and; recommendations on the involvement of associations in implementing policies to encourage immigrant women to get involved in sport.
